This course explores central themes in democratic theory including civic participation, political representation, liberalism, republicanism, deliberation, immigration, pluralism, power, civic identity, and race and class inequality. In engaging with historical and contemporary texts, students will be encouraged to reflect on the meaning of democratic citizenship. Readings draw from Aristotle, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Dewey, Walter Lippmann, James Madison, Iris Marion Young, Jurgen Habermas, Alexis de Tocqueville, Sheldon Wolin, and Judith Shklar. (Gen. Ed.
