Flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, different flow equations, dependence of viscosity on temperature and shear rate. Simple shear flow with examples of Poiseuille / pressure flow and Couette / drag flow geometries. Measurements of rheological parameters using capillary, rotating cylinder parallel plate and cone-plate rheometers. Viscoelasticity and exposure to mechanical and molecular models. Simple model flows and their application for analyzing polymer processing, with a few practical examples. Classification of Polymer Processing operations. Processing of polymers by common techniques. Flow analysis of few selected operations using model flows. The processing operations will include: Extrusion and its analysis, Extrusion film blowing, Calendaring, Fiber Spinning, Injection molding, Blow molding - Extrusion and injection, Thermoforming, Rotational molding, Compression and transfer molding, and 3D Printing.
