Introduction to sociology. America's major social problems--past and present--are examined. These include crime, mental health, drug addiction, family tensions and inequalities based on race, gender, ethnicity and social class. (Gen.Ed. SB, DU)

Open to first year Exploring Society RAP students in Emerson. Students in Exploring Society RAP in Emerson Hall will enroll together in "Social Problems" (Sociology 103). In this course we will explore some of the major social problems in the U.S. and beyond. We will use the tools and perspectives of sociology to explore topics such as systemic racism, mass incarceration and police violence, poverty, and the disparate social impacts of digital technology. We will pay particular attention to power and its role in defining and disputing what constitutes a social problem.
