Federico Garcia Lorca is arguably the most canonical author in twentieth-century Spanish literature, and is often studied solely as a writer, although he exploited other artistic facets such as stage director, screenwriter, musician, and painter. In all these realms he struggled to find an audience for his art, which we will analyze in this seminar. In addition, we will pay attention to the construction of Lorca as an icon of the collective memory of the Spanish Civil War, and as an icon for LGBTQ and progressive ideas. Additional materials will include secondary bibliography, and screen and stage adaptations of his plays.
