The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

Open to First-Year students only. SPHHS FYS U-Thrive: Explore-Contact Tracing and Leadership
This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Contact Tracing and Leadership.

This course will teach the important skill of contact tracing, and give a historical, epidemiological, and policy background to the approaches used by contact tracers to protect public health. Students will also consider the crucial skills needed to work on public health teams, especially during challenging times.
