The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: The Science of Movement.

Every animal moves around, and we often take it for granted. Walking is a complicated and repetitive task that is influenced by many internal processes and interactions with the environment. The goal of this seminar is to understand basic biomechanical concepts to learn more about walking and how it differs between healthy and pathological conditions.
