The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

Open to first-year students. SPHHS FYS U-Thrive: Explore-Acting Up to Fight Disease
(note: open to non-SPHHS students)

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Acting Up to Fight Disease.

Act up, fight back! You have the power to move health policy forward. This course will introduce students to community health activism and examine organized community actions from past and present. Learn about types of actions that work and how to collaborate successfully with diverse communities and policymakers to have a positive impact on public health.
