The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

Open to First-Year students only. SPHHS FYS U-Thrive: Explore-Health at Every Size
This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Health at Every Size.

This seminar will examine the health impacts of obesity using evidence-based research. We will then transition into learning about weight bias and the obesity stigma. Finally, we will address methods that are used to support a shift in mindset away from weight loss as a health goal.
