The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Sleep, Physical Activity, and Health.
How do sleep and physical activity patterns change across the lifespan? Can we sleep or exercise too much? Students will explore how our choices around physical behaviors impact our health and well-being at all ages.
