The SPHHS first-year seminar (FYS) U-Thrive and Explore is designed to support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic related to public health and health sciences. The first six weeks of the semester will be designed to provide the foundational skills for students to be successful and thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will be focused on exploring a public health and health science topic. Finalized topics can be viewed under class notes.

Open to First-Year students only. SPHHS FYS U-Thrive: Explore-Toxic Communities and Environmental Justice

This seminar will support your transition to college and introduce you to a topic in public health and health sciences. The first six weeks will provide foundational skills for students to thrive at UMass. The last seven weeks will focus on exploring the topic: Toxic Communities and Environmental Justice.

This FYS will utilize a variety of materials across different disciplines to foster meaningful conversation on topics of environmental justice and health inequality. Some of the main concepts we will cover are environmental racism, residential mobility, sustainable development, and climate justice.
