When Google or Meta announce yet another data breach, what does that really mean? In today's world, governments and companies regularly collect and use large amounts of personal data. As a result, no one?s data is completely private anymore. Even ordinary people - like you! - frequently benefit from big data in their everyday lives. In this course, we'll learn about how data is commonly collected, who?s collecting this information, and what they stand to gain from it. We?ll discuss the legality and morality of big data use - who should be allowed to use data, and which data should be fair game? Finally, we'll ask what all of this means for privacy, convenience, scientific progress, and well-being.
