Doordash, Uber, Lyft, TaskRabbit, and more. At one point or another, most of us have used these apps to ask for a ride, have food delivered, or have a task completed. The rise of these app- and web-based digital platforms has given rise to what sociologists and economists call the platform economy. In this class, we will explore the platform economy using a sociological approach to explore questions such as: what is the platform economy and how has it impacted the broader global economy? Why has there been a rise in the usage of app-based services? Who are the people doing this form of work and why? How is this changing our broader understandings of what "work" is?
