Despite many advances in the diagnoses and treatment of mental illness, those afflicted with mental illness remain one of the most highly stigmatized groups in society. In this seminar, we will investigate stigma associated with mental illness from diverse perspectives, including social psychology, clinical psychology, evolutionary psychology, sociology, public policy, history, and biology. In addition to other topics, we will examine cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses toward individuals with mental illness, the role of the media in perpetuating stereotypes about mental illness, self-stigmatization, the experiences of those afflicted with mental illness, and efforts to reduce stigma.
