The course introduces basics and fundamentals of electrochemistry, photochemistry, photoconversion and thermoelectric conversion. It will cover structure, material, evaluation and application of various devices including fuel cells, bio-fuel cells, photoelectrochemical cells, electrocatalysts, photocatalysts, photoelectrocatalysts, bio-electrocatalysts, solar cells, batteries, supercapacitors, thermoelectric generators, electrochemical and resistive sensors as well as biosensors. This course will also discuss applications of such devices in environmental monitoring and remediation, homeland security, agriculture, food science, healthcare, energy conversion and storage, utilization of renewable energy sources such as sunlight, water, biomass, and waste heat.
Open to juniors, seniors and graduate students in the College of Engineering and the College of Natural Sciences. Students are not required to have a particular prerequisite, but some knowledge in chemistry and physics helps success in the course.
