The purpose of this class is to introduce students to theories, methods, and philosophies of qualitative inquiry used in sport management. In this discussion-based seminar, we will cover (1) the history, ethics, and politics of qualitative inquiry, (2) theoretical paradigms, (3) specific methods (e.g., interviewing, observation, text analysis) and methodologies (e.g., case study, ethnography, narrative inquiry) of qualitative inquiry, (4) analyzing and interpreting qualitative material, and (5) evaluating qualitative research. Readings will include a mix of seminal articles or book chapters in qualitative inquiry broadly, as well as writing and research drawn from sport management specifically.

Open to Isenberg School of Management PhD students only.
