Theater 393NH - S- Devised Theater hons

Devised Theater: BEING RE/EVOLUTIONARY will use an ensemble-based theater practice to explore various dynamics of power and revolutionary action within our society. This class will function in partnership with members of the Re/Emergence Collective, a local community-based theater organization committed to making art that is critically conscious and centered around community care. Together, we will reflect on the following questions: How can students collectively address the pressures of university life in uncertain times? What role does creativity play in the creation of a more sustainable campus culture? How might devised theater, as an art-based pedagogy, aid in the formation of more inclusive and self-reflexive spaces for students at UMass? In addition to exploring theatrical techniques, the curriculum of this class will include ensemble-based exercises and games, films, and attendance at local performances, as well as a final creative research project of the students? design.
