Do you ever wonder about the stories teachers DON'T tell you when they discuss big-name scientists? Is it fair to characterize historic figures in science as just "good guys" and "bad guys"? This course offers a unique opportunity to challenge traditional narratives, foster critical thinking, and gain a nuanced understanding of the intersection between scientific greatness and ethically problematic viewpoints. Content warning: this course will discuss heavy topics in science, including but not limited to false ideas about racial and intellectual hierarchies, unethical research practices, and sterilization.
