Chinese 397P - ST-Traditional Chinese Theater

This course introduces masterpieces of Chinese drama, while training students to appreciate the theatrical music and performance of traditional Chinese opera and performing arts. Through a survey of traditional opera and storytelling, this course explores both artistic values intrinsic to the Chinese theatrical tradition and social values associated with it. We will examine various genres such as the Kun opera, Peking opera, big drum songs, etc. Knowledge of Chinese language is not required.
