This course will provide students with a broad overview of autism spectrum disorder across the lifespan. Students will be introduced to the history of autism as a diagnostic category and its reconceptualization within the neurodiversity movement. This course will review current understandings of the biological and environmental causes of autism as well as current methods of screening and assessment. This course will critically evaluate approaches to treatment and support within family, school and community settings. The lived experience of autistic children and adults at the intersection of other identities, including race, gender, and sexuality, will be discussed. Students will engage with empirical research as well as personal narratives throughout the course.

Pre Req: PSYCH 100 Registration is only open to students in the Developmental Disabilities and Human Services (DDHS) Specialization for the first month of registration.
