Access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation continue to be a challenge both in the developed and the developing world. Public health interventions to diminish the burden of disease by improving access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene have been successful in many parts of the world. However challenges with respect to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) still remain and continue to lead to morbidity and mortality globally. Children, particularly those under the age of five, bear a disproportionate burden of disease which impacts their physical and cognitive development. This course will focus on the human health implications and challenges of water delivery systems and sanitation infrastructure in different parts of the world. Threats to water quality, water-borne diseases, role that malnutrition plays in morbidity/mortality, and how poor water quality and inadequate sanitation impact education will also be discussed.
