Focusing on modern and contemporary visual culture, we will ask: what does it mean to see, imagine, and witness Black queer feminisms? Topics include formerly enslaved drag artist-activist William Dorsey Swann, Cheryl Dunye's The Watermelon Woman, Mickalene Thomas's mixed media collages, and a vast range of other Black visual culture.

391F- Seminar in African Art
Art and Politics in Africa and the Diaspora
This course will look at African and diasporic visual traditions from the early-modern period to the present. From the Benin bronzes to anti-colonial art movements, we will think about how art has been an integral part of political resistance and expression in Africa and the diaspora. In this seminar, we will discuss the ways in which Black people on both sides of the Atlantic created art to navigate their rapidly changing social and political landscape. We will analyze a broad array of artistic expressions from an interdisciplinary perspective including visual art, music, and dance. Using a discussion-based format, this course will encourage students to make connections across time and space.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
