First-year (R1ST) Title: The Art and Science of Fermentation
Description: What do beer, chocolates, insulin, and antibiotics have in common? They are all products of fermentation! Fermentation is an exciting process in which we equip microorganisms to make beneficial products for us. What factors are involved in making a good fermented product? What makes it so versatile that you can use it in food, pharmaceutical, biotech, and so many more industries? How safe is the entire process (after all, we are dealing with microbes!)?
Enter the impactful world of fermentation and learn how these tiny microbes convert seemingly useless substances into something so useful. Let's take a mini trip down history lane to see how we first started fermenting stuff and how it was adapted by different cultures across the globe. We will also work together on developing skills to help you transition into the undergraduate world!
