This course's main task will be centered on the question, "What is Law's capacity for social change?" We will explore how we observe, understand, and use the Law every day. As a FYS course, we will navigate together much of what UMass has to offer for your social and academic development while interacting with an interdisciplinary field. Students will engage in critical, reflexive, and dynamic approaches to the study of the Law. We will consider such topics as: legal theories and perspectives, legal actors and institutions, legal decision-making, the enforcement of the law, and law's relationship to society.
