This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of internal combustion engines. Attention will be paid to how engine design affects their operation, power, efficiency, fuel requirements, and emissions. Lectures will include discussion of fluid flow, thermodynamics, combustion, heat transfer and friction phenomena. The design and operating characteristics of different types of internal combustion engines including spark-ignition, diesel and mixed-cycle engines will be explored.
