As the climate changes, many regions of the world are experiencing aridification. Aquifers are being depleted. Surface water is increasingly polluted and in coastal areas, saltwater intrusion threatens fresh water supplies. Water insecurity is a threat multiplier. As social-ecological systems adapt, existing social inequalities will intensify. Where there is inadequate sanitation infrastructure, waterborne disease proliferates. Indigenous nations are disproportionately impacted. Women and girls who are responsible for supplying water for their household face additional stressors. This course will provide students with an understanding of the linkages between water scarcity, water pollution, and human health. Students will be equipped to think critically and holistically about the prevention of water insecurity and water pollution, and to evaluate public health interventions in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
