This course focuses on the analysis, planning, design, and facilitation of creative projects for public spaces. This course will examine the conceptual framework for what public art is, how artists and designers are engaged, and how public art projects are produced in the United States. In addition, students will gain practical experience and knowledge of the design process for public art. The course will begin with an introduction to public art practice, including a brief history and exploration of public art and design in context. Topics to be covered include the evaluation of public projects, controversies, temporary works, current issues related to monuments, the roles that stakeholders play in the process, how artist selection occurs, funding and commissions, educational programming, and the importance of research and planning. Readings, case studies, creative projects, and site visits will be used to give students an overview of the field and the role that public art plays in communities. Students will synthesize their learning in an independent project in a medium of their choice including but not limited to: 2D and print media, graphic design, interactive media, digital fabrication, sculpture, 3D design, installation, photography, video, performance, and participatory art.

Open to MAT-ART and MFA-ART students.
