This course covers both the principles and the practice of mobile and wireless networks. Topics will include application use cases, the unique aspects of the wireless (as opposed to wireline) links, and approaches for handling mobility, authentication, security and privacy, energy management, user localization, and virtualization in mobile and wireless networks. The focus of 'practice' will cover the overall architectures (both control plane and data plane) of 802.11 (WiFi) networks and 4G/5G cellular systems; LEOS, vehicular, and IoT networks will also be briefly covered. This course counts as a CS Elective for the CS Major.

Open to MS-CMPSCI and MS-ECE students only. UNIV LECT 01 FOR UNDERGRADS; LECT 02 FOR GRADS. THE COURSE PROVIDES FLEXIBLE INSTRUCTIONAL MODES. STUDENTS MAY TAKE EITHER WHOLLY IN-PERSON, OR WHOLLY ONLINE. AIMED MORE AT CS STUDENTS RATHER THAN EE STUDENTS. ASSUMES STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY HAD AN INTRODUCTORY NETWORKING COURSE (I.E., COMPSCI 453, E&C-ENG 374, OR EQUIVALENT). COURSE WILL OPEN TO EE MAJORS MEETING PREREQUISITE, IF AVAILABLE SEATS. EE MAJORS SHOULD WAIT FOR ELIGIBILITY TO OPEN TO SELF-ENROLL OR ADD TO THE WAITLIST AND SHOULD NOT REQUEST AN OVERRIDE. SEATS HELD FOR INCOMING GRADUATE STUDENT REGISTRATION.
