In this course, students will develop their Korean proficiency at an advanced level through exploring the content of modern Korean history. By doing so, students will also achieve deeper understanding of Korean culture and society. Students will read the main course materials in Korean and discuss major events and the meanings of them in the Korean historical context. Students are also recommended to read reference materials in both English and Korean to gain a deeper understanding of the historical events. To make the material understandable, various types of media will be used such as movies, literature, songs, news, pictures and the television and radio programs, and so forth. Students will get a strong foundation in modern history starting from the late Chosun period to present. With the goal to further develop all four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, students will work toward discussing and writing abstract concepts in a coherent manner. By the end of the course, students will be able to describe, narrate, compare, and report abstract academic concepts in series of coherently arranged paragraph level discourses. This course is the advanced level Korean designed for students who have completed Pre-advanced Korean II or have equivalent proficiency in Korean language.
