This course examines Renaissance notions of the self in relation to the genre of portraiture. We will begin by studying theories of Renaissance subjectivity, as well as the rise of the portrait in fifteenth-century Italy. The bulk of the course will focus on the first half of the sixteenth century?after Mona Lisa (c. 1505)?a period of great creativity and expansion in the genre. Artists include Leonardo, Raphael, Titian, Lotto, Parmigianino, and Bronzino. Student research projects may address the concept of portraiture outside art history and/or outside the Renaissance period.

Open to Graduate students only. Genre/Object/Likeness: Portraiture in Renaissance Venice from Bellini to Moroni

Portraiture, in the sense of a visual likeness of an individual person, is a quintessential genre of Renaissance art. This class examines the trajectory and contribution of Venetian portraiture through an analysis of different artists? approaches to the genre as well as the ways portraits functioned in the social and political context of the city and its surrounding territory. Particular attention will be given to painters Giovanni Bellini, Antonello da Messina, Giorgione, Titian, Lorenzo Lotto, Moretto da Brescia, and Giovanni Battista Moroni. Research topics for the class may extend to other periods of art history provided they relate to the works of art and issues addressed in class.
