This is a project-based course focusing on exposing students to the nuts and bolts of interior design. This course will give students an in-depth understanding of the history and function of the design fields and the relationship between interior designers and consumer culture. We will confront the ethical challenges faced by designers in the field, including environmental and socio-cultural responsibility and the uncomfortable truth of class differences in the field. This is a hands-on course with multiple required field trips to local design showrooms. Students will create a semester-long Portfolio Project broken down into 6 assignments that will lead to a portfolio-ready design project.

Open to BDIC majors. Open to BDIC majors only or by department consent (email bdic@umass.edu)
