This is a lecture and movement course that serves as an introduction to Hip Hop, street and club dance culture. Forms and dance styles covered during class span from vernacular jazz, funk styles, Hip Hop foundation, partying dances, Popping, Breaking, Locking, Litefeet, House, and more. Critical analysis of the Elements of Hip Hop will be an integral component of class discussions and performance-based work. Through the use of movement practice, video and written text, the course will examine the ways in which Hip Hop dance has evolved through time with a focus on building community within and outside the dance studio. Each class will include a lecture, a warm-up and across the floor movement progressions followed by either a combination or structured freestyle that utilizes the form learned in each class session.

This class is open to BA and BFA Dance majors only.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
