We will examine three main aspects of plastics: (1) which plastics are commonly manufactured, (2) to what extent these plastics can be captured, reused, and recycled, and (3) their impacts on the environment, from species to ecosystems. We will discuss, for example, The Ocean Cleanup's innovative approaches to capturing plastic waste from the ocean and rivers. Curious? Take a look at https://theoceancleanup.com/ocean-plastic-pollution-explained/. Learning about plastics is only one goal of this course; demystifying the college experience is another. We'll discuss getting the most out of (any) class, how to figure out how to study for different courses, making a homework plan, interacting with professors, and asking for letters of recommendation, to name just a few.
