First-year (R1ST) Title: Coffee & Conservation: From Bean to Biodiversity
What's in your cup of coffee? How do you know if your cup of coffee is sustainable or not? How can your coffee choice contribute to a more sustainable world? In this course, we will explore the global journey of coffee-from its tropical origins to your morning brew-and how it connects to biodiversity, sustainable farming, birds, bees, and ecosystems. Through in class activities such play-role games and real-world examples, you will discover how your everyday choices can impact the environment and the people who grow our food. At the end of this course you will be able to identify what types of coffee are sustainable and the impacts of your coffee choice has on biodiversity. Like other First Year Seminars we will also cover skills to help you succeed in your first semester at UMass Amherst.
