First-year (R1ST) Title: Let's Talk about Sex (Hormones)
How do we define a person's sex? In this course, we will explore the biological role that sex hormones (like estrogens and testosterones) have on the brain, body, and behavior of human and animal species. From sexual differentiation in human development to sex-changing fish, hormones are critical drivers of sex-dependent anatomy, behaviors, and social standing. We will then apply this knowledge to consider the impact of sex hormones on current real-world issues, such as gender affirming care, men's and women's sports, and anti-transgender legislation. We will encourage students to consider the intersection of biology, psychology, and culture in the ways that we define ourselves and others. Like other First Year Seminars, we will also cover skills to help you succeed in your first semester at UMass Amherst.
