First-year (R1ST) Title: Scientific Storytelling
Do you feel that scientific terms like GMOs and CRISPR are used in the media despite a lack of public understanding? Science is not just about data and discovery, but also about communicating the research to others. In this team-based seminar you will research and become 'experts' in your topic. Then you will explore how to effectively communicate scientific discoveries of your choosing to different audiences, from experts to the general public. This course will provide you with the tools for researching complex topics while working within a team. You will also be introduced to the art of crafting compelling stories that make complex scientific concepts accessible, engaging, and impactful. Lastly, you will develop skills for success in your first semester at university, identify resources on campus, and discover what fun activities UMass has to offer.
