First-year (R1ST) Title: Too Much, Too Little: Climate Extremes and Social Justice
What happens when the water runs out-or when there's far too much of it? In this course, we'll explore two of the most devastating impacts of climate change: floods and droughts. What causes these climate extremes, and why are they becoming more intense and frequent? More importantly, who suffers the most when disaster strikes? As we investigate these questions, we'll focus on the unequal impacts of climate disasters and examine why some communities are more vulnerable than others. Through stories, data, and real-world case studies, we'll uncover how climate injustice affects people and places in different ways-and what can be done about it. Like other First Year Seminars, we will also work together on developing skills that will help you succeed in your first semester at UMass Amherst.
