This course introduces students to college life and to the discipline of political science by way of exploring the politics of human rights. We will engage in questions such as: What are human rights, and where do they come from? Why is it so challenging to enforce human rights? How do marginalized communities make use of human rights claims to advocate for themselves? What are the limitations and potential pitfalls of human rights in a diverse and deeply unequal world? Through investigating this nuanced and divisive topic, students will learn how to become globally-minded critical thinkers who can translate academic knowledge into their careers and everyday lives. Simultaneously, students will build `hard' and `soft' skills that will help them make the most of their college experience and set them up for success in the political science major.
