This course prepends an optional semester to the BSME capstone design course (MIE 415) for students wanting to do more complex, industry-sponsored projects. MIE 415 is the third course in the mechanical design sequence that began junior year with design of mechanical components, progressed through the design of mechanical assemblies, and culminates with the design of mechanical systems. Both MIE 414 and 415 lead the students through the process of identifying the customers' needs and casting them in terms of engineering specifications that can be measured. These specifications are then used to develop a design that best meets the customers' goals.
MIE 414 satisfies a technical elective for Mechanical Engineering majors. MIE 415 is a required course that is then taken in the spring.
M&I-ENG 302, 313,344,354,& 375 Students interested in taking part in this course as part of a year-long capstone will respond to Professor Lagrant's email (sent in early April) with instructions on how to join a team. You will not be able to self-register for this course. If Professor Lagrant approves you to be added to a team, Kevin Romani will enroll you in this course late April/early May and send you confirmation once you are added.
In addition to the listed pre-requisites, MIE 413 must have been taken previously or must be taken concurrently with this course to participate.
