To give students a deeper understanding of families' experiences, and to provide families with much needed support, students will provide home-based respite care to a family raising a child, adolescent or adult with an intellectual or developmental disability. Students will learn about the nature and function of respite care through assigned readings and class discussion. Students will receive training on best practices in providing care to a person with a disability in the home context.

This course requires participation in a one-hour class meeting (worth 1 credit) as well as 3 additional hours of field experience in the community (worth 1 credit) each week. Field experience takes place between 4pm and 7pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, therefore students must have at least one of these days available on a weekly basis in order to participate in this course.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
