In this class we will explore the content that linguistics expressions convey about the identity of language users, their demographic profile, interactional positioning, and affiliations. The topic is at the cross roads of sociolinguistics, anthropology, philosophy of language and formal semantics and pragmatics. We will explore how formal theories of meaning can add to the study of language as a tool to build persona, and how the study of language conveying this type of meaning allows us to sharpen our formal theories.
