This course introduces students to the concepts and practice of data science with special attention to economic applications. The class aims to prepare students to critically understand the collection, storage, retrieval, merging, tabulation, and presentation of quantitative data. Applying data science to social and economic analysis allows for the understanding and critiquing of the application of data science to social and economic problems. Focus will be on understanding the sources and quality of data and the relevance of decisions about data that is used. We will discuss and analyze case studies of particular data applications to illustrate the usefulness of the methods and to place data analysis within a political and normative context.

Open only to Econ Primary majors until December 1, then open to all.
