This course will introduce students who already have background in phonetics and phonological theory to both phenomena and analytic approaches to the phonology and phonetics of tone and intonation in the world's languages. Topics may include: autosegmental and autosegmental-metrical theory, the prosodic hierarchy and phonological constituency, tonal features, tone and voice quality, tonal underspecification and interpolation, the interaction of tone and intonation, tonal coarticulation and tonal sandhi, long-distance processes and computational complexity, tonogenesis, and interfaces with morphosyntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
