The broad disciplines of natural resources conservation, ecology, and environmental science often require field work, whether it is in a forest around the corner or on a coastline on the other side of the globe. Early in their careers, students learn about experimental design, sampling protocols, and data analyses, however little formal training is provided about field logistics. Field logistics includes topics such as permitting, trip planning, equipment transport, risk management, and emergency preparedness, with related skills usually learned `on-the-fly? rather than in a structured setting. Although many potential employers do offer or are required to provide training, the practicalities related to `real life? field conditions are often overlooked. Given the highly competitive nature of field sciences and the increasing global context of the research, developing a diverse skill set related to field logistics and remote expeditions may not only help increase the potential for employment, but may also reduce risk to you and others.
