Acting Through Song is a course for actors seriously interested in pursuing musical theater. The course will encourage actors to look at musical theater performance through both a dramaturgical and musical lens. Throughout the semester, students will develop a stronger understanding of music; history and theory behind the art form; and, most importantly, a strong foundation on which to continue honing their strongest suits as performers and exploring their untapped skills as musical theater artists. Using practices we?ve already learned as actors, we?ll dig into character work and what it means to be not just a principal, but also an ensemble member who can develop an individual ?voice.? We?ll explore vocal work, delving into best practices for solos as well as learning to sing as a company member, and marry those skills with character work as we investigate full scenes and songs together. We?ll also do a bit of movement, working with a choreographer to learn basic musical theater techniques and styles. The class will culminate in a cabaret curated by the class that will showcase each student?s further developed sense of storytelling through solos, scenework, and dance. Students will also leave the course with at least one song for their audition book, a sense of how to navigate musical theater auditions, and a fresh ability with which to discuss and analyze a full show. A basic understanding of music is required.
