This course provides a comprehensive introduction to medical physiology, focusing on the mechanisms that underlie the function of the mammalian organism. Topics include the structure and function of major organ systems, including the nervous, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive, endocrine, and reproductive system. Emphasis is placed on maintenance of homeostasis, cellular communication, and the integration of body systems in health and disease. Students will gain an understanding of physiological processes at the cellular, tissue, and organ levels, and learn how these processes are regulated to maintain internal homeostasis. The course combines lectures with in-class clinical case study exercises to apply information learned and practice deductive reasoning skills.

Open to junior and senior Animal Science & Pre-Veterinary majors. ANIMSCI or BIOCHEM or BIO 285 Students from other majors should contact lwest0@umass.edu for enrollment information.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
