Biological research produces a variety of images, that need to be processed. What are the methods, standards and ethics behind biological image processing? Students will learn the foundations of image data: what is a pixel, and what does it represent in a biological image? What are bit depth, channels and stacks? What are file types, and what is image compression? What is metadata, and how is it associated with biological data? What are the reporting standards when publishing biological images? Students will learn technical skills and techniques to quantify and analyze biological images. The course will primarily focus on microscopy data, but the foundations will extend to other types of biological imaging. The scientific ethics of image presentation and manipulation will be covered, including image accessibility. The lecture will cover theory, while the computer-based analysis lab will focus on application. Analyzed images will be provided by the instructor, although students will have the opportunity to examine their own images as well.
This course is open to BIOLOGY majors only. ANIMLSCI/BIO/BIOCHEM 285 w/ C
