This course examines aspects of popular culture, from digital media to music to fandom, the shape these forms take, and their political, historical, economic, and social significance in shaping how we know, understand, experience, and interact with the world. Readings and class discussions examine elements of popular culture, guiding students through key methodological approaches to media and pop culture studies to gain critical literacies about the influence and power of media and pop culture on contemporary US cultures, experiences, and communities. Required assignment invite students to analyze aspects of media and pop culture that they find meaningful, bringing their own investments, experiences, and expertise to bear on their readings of popular culture.
