Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a mathematical and visual means for conceptualizing, examining and understanding how relationships between people, organizations, and/or other actors form, and what resources are (or are not) accessed through those connections. In this course, we explore the conceptual and theoretical underpinnings of social network analysis, and the ways in which it has been used to examine how ties between actors from in any number of educational contexts support or constrain essential organizational outcomes, such as instructional innovation, student learning, and organizational improvement. Challenges and ethical considerations associated with the use of SNA for applied research are discussed.
This course will have periodic synchronous meeting times, to be determined by the students and instructor at the beginning of the semester.
