This seminar examines Israeli and Palestinian societies through their cinematic representations, exploring competing national narratives and shared histories. Students will trace Israeli and Palestinian cinemas from the British Mandate through the establishment of Israel, onset of Palestinian diasporas, the wars of 1948 and 1967, to the current moment. The course investigates themes of borders and walls, historical traumas, collective memory, and cultural appropriations, while incorporating related media, music, and visual arts. All materials are available with English translation.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
