First Year Seminar 191CNS1 - FYS- RAP First Year Seminar
TU 8:30AM 9:20AM
This course is only open to students registered for the CNS First Year Seminar RAP in Crabtree Hall. First-year (R1ST) Topic: Learn the biology of monsters
Description:
For thousands of years, people across cultures have used monsters and mythical creatures to explain the unknown, reflect societal fears, warn others of danger, or simply entertain. In this course, we will continue that tradition by using fictional creatures as a framework for exploring very real concepts in biology, ecology, evolution, and behavior. Through familiar monsters drawn from mythology, folklore, literature, and modern media, students will examine how environmental pressures, survival strategies, and cultural influences shape the traits and behaviors of both fictional and real organisms.
By combining creative discussion with scientific reasoning, students will learn to think critically about why a creature might evolve certain adaptations, occupy a particular ecological niche, or emerge within a specific cultural context. The course emphasizes accessibility and discussion-based learning, allowing students from all academic backgrounds to engage with scientific thinking in a low-pressure and imaginative environment.
In addition to our monster studies, the course will also serve as a space for developing interpersonal connections, learning about campus resources, and building skills for scholarly success during the transition to university life.
